Brussels Effect

avril 27, 2023 @ 8 h 00 min - 17 h 00 min

Conference co-organized by WBI on the impact of the European Union on the regulation of new technologies

The world is changing at an unprecedented pace, and the emergence of new technologies has brought about new challenges for policymakers and regulators. The regulation of new technologies is a topic of great interest to many stakeholders, including policymakers, businesses, academics, and civil society.

The conference on « The Brussels Effect » was held to explore the impact of European Union regulations on global markets and the regulation of new technologies. The concept of the Brussels Effect refers to the EU’s ability to set regulatory standards that are adopted by other countries and regions around the world due to the economic influence of the EU.

One of the main topics of discussion at the conference was the regulation of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, data protection, algorithms, etc. Participants discussed how the EU’s regulations in these areas could set a global standard for ethical and responsible use of these technologies, and how this could have a significant impact on businesses operating in these industries.

Another key topic of discussion was the role of the EU in shaping a democratic society, and how its regulatory power could be used to promote sustainable economic growth and social welfare. Speakers emphasized the importance of collaboration between the EU and other countries to ensure that regulatory frameworks for new technologies are effective and internationally recognized.

Overall, the conference highlighted the significant influence that the EU has on global regulations, and the potential for the Brussels Effect to shape the regulation of new technologies in a way that promotes ethical and sustainable business practices.
